Defenseman Nick Boyton was suspended for one regular season game for making a throat-slashing gesture at Blair Jones of the Tampa Bay Lightning during a pre-season game on Wednesday, September 22. Boyton will miss the Blackhawks season opener on October 7th in Colorado.
Funny story, New Jersey’s 100 million dollar man Ilya Kovalchuk told Rangers pest Sean Avery to zip it with his hand and then publicly said he was not trying to threaten his life and hoped the NHL would not suspend him.
The Blackhawks are hosting Chris Chelios Heritage Night at the United Center on Friday, December 17. Chelios will drop the ceremonial first puck. The organization will also honor him with a pre-game video and in-game tributes. If you find yourself fin the Chicago area and have nothing to do, the first 10,000 fans get a hat. Chelios played 9 of his 26 years in the NHL with the Blackhawks.
In 3 games this preseason, the Blackhawks have a 1-2 record. Chicago split a home and home against Detroit and also lost a 4-2 decision to Tampa Bay.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets have dropped 3 out of 4 of their preseason games. Columbus lost two against the Pittsburgh Penguins, by scores of 5-4 and 3-1. The Blue Jackets were manhandled by the Washington Capitals 6-2. The Blue Jackets lone preseason victory was a 5-2 win that came at the expense of the Atlanta Thrashers.
Detroit Red Wings
After colliding with Penguins player Brooks Orpik, Johan Franzen suffered a charlie horse and is expected to miss 3 preseason games. Juri Huddler and Brian Rafalski have also missed games due to minor injuries.
Detroit signed forward Trevor Parkes to a three-year entry level contract. Parkes was invited to camp on an amateur tryout. Parkes spent last season with Montreal of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The Red Wings beat the Rangers 5-3 and split their preseason games with Chicago and lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1.
St. Louis Blues
Peter McLoughlin, CEO of Blues Enterprises, left the team for the NHL. McLoughlin has been named president of the Seattle Seahawks. Mike McCarthy, vice chairman of the Blues, has been named interim CEO of the Blues.
The Blues won both of their preseason contests against the Wild by a 5-1 and 5-0 scores. During the shutout, Wild goalie Josh Harding tore his ACL and will likely miss the entire season. St. Louis also shutout Colorado last week 2-0. The Blues lost preseason games to the Dallas Stars, 5-2 and Avalanche 3-1.
