Predators defenseman Shane O’Brien was suspended by the NHL for two games Friday afternoon after hitting Panthers forward Stephen Weiss in the face at the end of the first period Thursday night. No penalty was called on the play. O’Brien will forfeit $39,024.40 in salary.
O’Brien is considered a repeat offender because he was suspended before, for one game in November 2009. Still with the Vancouver Canucks, O’Brien was suspended for making contact with Sean Avery of the New York Rangers with his stick while both players were on the bench.
The suspension could not come at a worse time. Nashville’s next two games comprise of yet another back-to-back series, this time both games are against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
Chicago and Nashville are separated by one point in the Western Conference standings. O’Brien logs a lot of ice time when the team is shorthanded and his presence on the blue line will be missed. The Predators are tied for second with the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL for penalty kill percentage with an 86.6 kill-off rate.
