TSN, the Canadian sports giant, has just released its list of the 50 top NHL players – and two cornerstones of the Nashville Predators franchise make appearances.
Shea Weber comes in at #7 on the list. That makes him not only the most highly ranked member of the Predators roster, but the highest-ranked defenseman in the league and the only one to crack the top 10. Erik Karlsson and Zdeno Chara, who beat Weber for the Norris the last two seasons, come in at #11 and #12, respectively.
Weber is the third-highest ranked player from the Central Division. Pavel Datsyuk (#5) and Jonathan Toews (#6) are ahead, but Weber is tops among defensemen. The only other Central blueliners on the list are Alex Pietrangelo (#28) and Duncan Keith (#49).
Pekka Rinne is a little further down the list at #27, behind former teammate Ryan Suter (#26). That makes Pekka the third-highest-ranked goalie in the league. Only Henrik Lundqvist (#15) and Jonathan Quick (#16) rank higher. He’s also the only Central Division goalie to make the list, outshining Detroit’s Jimmy Howard and St. Louis’ dynamic duo of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott.
It’s no surprise that Shea Weber and Pekka Rinne are the two players from the Nashville Predators roster that made TSN’s top NHL players list. Both are elite players at their respective positions. We know that well here in Nashville not only from watching them play, but after watching the franchise dole out nearly $150 million last year to keep the two of them here for the foreseeable future.
One notable takeaway from the list is just how good a thing it is that the Preds have Weber and Rinne. Five of the top NHL players on TSN’s list are Central Division forwards, making defense that much more valuable a commodity here in Nashville.
