It was a decision we all knew was coming after Marc-Andre’ Fleury let in so many goals against the Islanders. Not saying they didn’t earn those goals, but let us be fair Fleury didn’t exactly make it hard on them with his post hugging self. That being said, Tomas Vokoun is getting the nod for the Penguins in Game 5, and for some people it isn’t a moment too soon for the ex-Predator. A lot of people felt that Vokoun was headed the Chris Mason route to being our backup goaltender this year, alas it wasn’t meant to be when Pittsburgh snatched him up from the Capitals and inked him to a new deal. Pens fans were cheering in the streets, because they knew something that everybody else later found out…the Penguins won in spite of Fleury and not because of him.
I’m personally excited to see Vokoun get the nod, and hopefully a starting job again. Tomas Vokoun has always been one of my favorite Predators and I wish him nothing but the best. I just wish we had the salary cap to keep Vokoun while we had him because he was virtually untouchable every night in the net. I don’t know how many of you remember the old Predators under Vokoun, but they were sensational. He even did it with a worse defense than Pekka has had this year, and while I will always love Peks I fully understand Vokoun was my first true favorite goaltender. Even at his age, he can still play very effectively and I think he will shut the Islanders down once and for all. No offense to Islander fans, you’ve played great this series and the “Princess Crosby” chant kinda made me laugh.
So what is your take on the goaltending switch? Excited? Not excited? Apathy? I’m only posting out of love for my former Predator Vokoun, so leave some feedback. I will leave you with my favorite Vokoun moment.
