On Sunday night, the Preds headed into New Jersey to take on the Devils and for the second game in a row, were shut out 5-0.
Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils have always been known as a strong defensive team and that was on full display Sunday night. Brodeur recorded his 123rd career shut out and his second in a row. The Devils played solid team defense, but the Preds did not really apply a lot of pressure. They only mustered 15 shots on goal (6-4-5) and none of them were really quality chances.
The Devils got goals from Jaromir Jagr, Cam Janssen, Travis Zajac, Mattias Tedenby and former Pred Marek Zidlicky. The goal from Jagr was his 1700th NHL point. Jagr added number 1701 later in the night and is closing in on Mario Lemieux‘s 1723 which is good for 7th all-time. On the other hand, tough guy Janssen scored the 5th goal of his career in his 315th game, but he is heating up, with his 2nd goal in 3 games this season.
There was not a lot of good news to report from the game for the Preds. The highlight of the game might have to be the return of Matt Hendricks to the lineup. He caused a brief scare for Preds’ fans when he took a skate near the wrist in the second and left for a few minutes. Fortunately, he returned looking no worse for the wear.
Carter Hutton got the start again for the Preds and stopped 18 of 23 Devils’ shots. A couple of the goals he would probably like back and a couple he would probably like to ask his defense what exactly there were doing. The last two games have really been a worst case scenario for the Preds. Here’s hoping they turn it around soon.
