Welcome to the Predlines Morning Skate – November 14, 2013 edition. Glad you could join us this morning.
Earlier this week NHL-leading scorer Steven Stamkos suffered a broken tibia after crashing into the goal post of his own net while back checking. Two nights ago, Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was injured in overtime trying to make a save after running his leg into the post. The designer of the net pegs was contacted after the injury to Stamkos and said that the pegs were operating exactly as designed.
The injury to Quick does not appear to be nearly as serious as the injury to Stamkos, but this rash of injuries to Olympic-bound NHLers has to have us asking if maybe the Russians were right. A few weeks ago, Semyon Varlamov was arrested and a Russian official claimed it was a conspiracy to keep him out of the Olympics. Now we have injuries to US and Canadian stars to add to the mix. Tomas Vokoun is out indefinitely with blood clots; maybe Roman Josi‘s early season concussion was a shot to knock him out of the Olympics too. The next questions is whether the Sedin twins are the next target or running the operation?
The Buffalo Sabres were the big NHL news makers today. They fired GM Darcy Regier and Head Coach Ron Rolston after a lackluster start. The Sabres brought in former star Pat Lafontaine as Director of Hockey Operations and Ted Nolan as the interim Head Coach. Lafontaine has indicted he will look to hire a General Manager to replace Regier and this is where Predators’ fans become concerned. Nashville Predators assistant GM Paul Fenton is already being mentioned as a potential candidate for the job.
In the TMZ section of the Morning Skate, Sean Avery announced his engagement to supermodel Hilary Rhoda. Avery is known for a number of things, both on and off the ice. To be brief, we will limit our coverage of him to calling Martin Brodeur fatso and the Sean Avery Rule.
