Welcome to the Predlines Morning Skate – November 16, 2013 edition. Glad you could join us this morning.
Edmonton Oilers General Manager Craig MacTavish said on Thursday that it “would help immensely” if the Oilers could acquire a “big stud defenseman” (because who wouldn’t that help?). So, now begins the Shea Weber to the Edmonton Oilers trade rumors. Let’s discuss. The Nashville Predators cannot and will not trade Shea Weber to the Edmonton Oilers, or anyone else for that matter. They have invested a ton of up-front cash in Weber and ‘big stud defenseman’ is the most important position in the NHL. The only way you consider trading the cornerstone of the franchise is if it makes the team better now and better in the future. While Seth Jones may be able to play Weber-type minutes, he is not ready to shoulder the defensive load of the Preds just yet. This could a real discussion a couple of years down the road, but not now. Also, David Poile was the Washington Capitals GM when they were unable to match an offer sheet for Scott Stevens. You can guarantee Poile does not want to go through the scrutiny of losing his top defender again.
In real trade news, the Chicago Blackhawks traded Jimmy Hayes and Dylan Olsen for Kris Versteeg and Phillippe Lefebvre. Versteeg is the centerpiece of this deal and returns to Chicago after four years away. Versteeg is a two-time 20 goal scorer and will add depth to an already potent lineup. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by this morning. Check back a little later for a preview of tonight’s Predators-Blackhawks game.
