Wednesday's Predlines Headlines: Predators Lose in a Skills Competition

I hate the shootout. I really do. It’s not just because the Predators can’t seem to get it done in the shootout (it kinda is), but it’s ending a game on a slam-dunk competition or a field goal kicking contest. It’s an element of the game, but it isn’t the game. The thing that is so frustrating about it is you can’t just “practice” to get better at the shootout. There is an element of strategy and knowing the other goaltenders. You have to know what you are going to do, but you have to have the outright skill to back it up. That doesn’t come with coaching. That comes with specialized players that can pull of the right moves.

And once again, the Predators lose because they can’t win the skills competition. Dallas defeats Nashville, 3-2.

This means that Nashville is officially and mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The second-straight year the Preds have not made it to postseason play. Get your draft previews ready and lets get to Wednesday’s Predlines Headlines.

  • Vancouver’s Mike Gillis did not want to hire John Tortorella and he subtly said that either Torts goes or he goes. Vancouver ownership made it clear who it wanted and Gillis was relieved of his duties as general manager. Now, Gillis is probably the biggest name out there for general manager and he has proved he can win in the Western Conference. The question for him is not if he will find another landing spot, but where. – NHL.com
  • Who is gonna be the replacement for Gillis? It looks like it is going to be Trevor Linden. Nothing’s official yet, but he looks like the favorite. – Bob McKenzie
