Predators could make a massive trade to land Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson

The Predators have some interest in Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson, but what would a trade cost them?

The Nashville Predators are one of many teams considering acquiring Simon Edvinsson. There is no surprise that the Predators would be interested, as 6-foot-6, two-way defensemen don't exactly grow on trees, especially ones with as high an upside as the 23-year-old. If he signs a seven-year extension, acquiring Edvinsson to anchor your blueline would be a massive move for any general manager.

Of course, the trade and subsequent signing wouldn't come without risks. Edvinsson's upside is high, but despite what people think when throwing out trade proposals, he hasn't shown he can be a No. 1 defenseman yet. It's easy to play alongside Moritz Seider and look promising, but what happens when you have to become the Seider in that pairing?

There aren't many who know the exact details of the Edvinsson negotiations, but there is enough smoke around the asking price from the San Jose Sharks, including someone like Michael Misa, to imagine that the deal will cost you one of your top prospects. Would Nashville fans be willing to part with someone like Brady Martin if it locked in a defender?

Forwards are a strength in the prospect pool. If one of Martin, Wyatt Cullen, or even Yegor Surin went the other way in an Edvinsson trade, there is still plenty of depth to make up for it. Adding Shane Wright earlier this week to further improve the center depth is also an interesting move in the wake of all these rumors.

Predators looking to reshape blue line

Edvinsson immediately improves your blueline, and for a team looking to shake things up after adding Jayden Struble and putting Brady Skjei on the trade block, it makes sense that they are trying to add the Red Wings' defenseman. Edvinsson can not only help the team this season, but a future defense core that includes him, Tommy Bleyl, Tanner Molendyk, Cameron Reid, and Jacob Womback is intriguing, to say the least.

One question I would have is whether the Red Wings would listen to a defense prospect for Edvinsson instead of one of the forwards. If they don't move one of those blueline prospects out and they all hit, there will eventually be a logjam for ice time. While unlikely, acquiring Edvinsson without including Martin, Cullen, or Surin would be a massive win for the organization.

Edvinsson's recent sighting in Nashville, skating with a former Predators practice goalie, made some waves. However, his agency's headquarters being in the city doesn't mean he's destined to play for the organization. Nevertheless, time is running short for the defender to play this season with the December 1 deadline looming, so expect something to move soon.
