Jarred Tinordi has spent the majority of his career playing in the AHL. Will his time spent with the Nashville Predators help him stay in the NHL?

While the 2019-20 season is paused, we’re handing out season grades for the entire Nashville Predators roster.

28-year-old defenseman Jarred Tinordi joined the Nashville Predators organization in 2018. Up until this season, he spent all of this time as the captain for the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. One of the top teams in that respective league.

Tinordi played 32 games for the Admirals this season. In those games, he had six assists and no goals. His previous AHL season he scored eight goals, but this season he didn’t fair as well in the scoring department.

Tinordi’s time with Nashville has been less than stellar. In 28 starts this season, he has just a single goal and four assists. In fact, his lone goal, against the Washington Capitals, is his only goal in 81 NHL career starts.

What Tinordi Doesn’t Do Well

Obviously, Tinordi is not a scorer. In 397 AHL starts he has only netted 20 goals. His AHL assist total is better with 71, however, he only has ten assists in 81 NHL games.

Clearly Tinorid isn’t out there to generate tons of offense and show up all over the highlight reels like Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis or even Mattias Ekholm tend to do on a regular basis. His role is to be the enforcer of sorts.

Tinordi spent time on the second and third defensive pairings this season. With Ellis being out due to injury and the defensive pairings scrambled, Tinordi had an opportunity to shine.

I feel that the opportunity was not taken. He failed to make a big enough impact to make his spot safe going into next season.

What Tinordi Does Well

There is a word the NHL frowns upon that could be used to describe Tinordi’s style of play. That word is “enforcer”. What he lacks in scoring he makes up for with his size and ability to put other players into the boards.

Tinordi isn’t afraid to scrap, and he has the size to do it. Fans love to see it, and often times the Predators got pushed around by the opposition.

This is the positive that Tinordi brings to the table. It’s fun and entertaining to watch, but doesn’t always help your team win.

Viktor Arvidsson and Ellis were both injured in games that Tinordi didn’t even participate in. He didn’t think twice about exacting revenge for his new teammates when the opportunities presented themselves.

On February 15th, Tinordi squared off against Robert Bortuzzo of the St. Louis Blues. Bortuzzo had injured Arvidsson with a nasty and controversial cross-check back in November.

On March 7th, Tinordi took revenge again, this time on Corey Perry of the Dallas Stars. Everyone remembers the hit that Perry placed on Ellis in the Winter Classic.

C -. . D. Nashville Predators. JARRED TINORDI

It’s tough to give Tinordi a high score when you have defensemen like Josi and Ellis on the same team. Those guys are total package defensemen that also score goals and ignited the offensive attack for the wingers.

I’ve felt that the Nashville Predators have gotten pushed around this season by teams who live by their physicality. Nashville needs to give these teams a dose of their own medicine.

With Tinordi’s size and the recent acquisition of Korbinian Holzer, hopefully, the Nashville Predators will raise their physicality. If Tinordi becomes a full-time NHL player I will be looking for him to be even more physical next season.

However, Tinordi may not have shown enough promise to be a regular on the NHL level. He did prove that he can be called upon when there are spots to fill due to injury and provides a backup plan of sorts.

Perhaps the Predators will looking to fill that role with someone new that will bring more than just a big physical frame that throws the body around.
