Yakov Trenin Signs Two-Year Contract With The Predators

The Nashville Predators are starting to make some moves to solidify the team for next season as the NHL playoffs near completion.

On Thursday, the Nashville Predators announced that they had re-signed forward Yakov Trenin to a two-year, one-way contract. This new contract is worth $700,000 in 2020-21 and $750,000 in 2021-22.

The announcement came this past week via the Predators’ official website and social media.

Back in August, there was speculation that Trenin may be contemplating a move to Russia to play in the KHL and with the Russian National Team.

Through social media, Trenin’s agent released some photos of Trenin meeting with the CEO of the Russian National Team, Roman Rotenberg.

In an article by The Athletic’s Adam Vingan, Trenin’s agent said that it was possible that Trenin was moving on from the Predators and that he would not sign a two-way deal with the team.

This signing is good news for the Predators, who are in need of some bargain forwards.

The Predators are also in need of some players that can show more physicality. Trenin fits the bill on both counts.

Trenin played in 21 games for the Predators last season, scoring six points (2 goals, 4 assists). In 32 games for the Milwaukee Admirals, Trenin scored 35 points (20 goals, 15 assists).

Trenin’s physical style of play was a breath of fresh air for a team that was drifting in and out of playoff contention last season.

His limited game appearances and pre-playoff training camp were enough to earn him a roster spot on the Predators’ playoff team that traveled to Edmonton.

Many felt that he should’ve seen some minutes in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers, including myself.

Fans will rejoice at the news of Trenin’s signing. Many wondered why he didn’t see more ice time last season than some of the other under-performing forwards.

Trenin also became a fan-favorite last season when he went toe-to-toe with Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara and held his own against the 6’9″ defender.

With a full training camp under his belt and more direction from Head Coach John Hynes, Trenin will be an excellent addition to the Predators’ third or fourth lines next season.
